EMDR uses a natural function of the body, Rapid Eye Movement (REM) as its basis. When we have a disturbing life event happen it can get locked in our brain with the original picture, sounds, thoughts, feelings and body sensations.
Some experiences are adaptively stored and integrated (resolved) and others are maladaptively stored and unintegrated (separate and unresolved) with negative feelings and distorted perceptions. These maladaptively stored memories are most likely the source of your current difficulties. EMDR seems to stimulate the information and allows the brain to reprocess the experience, similar to what is happening in REM or dream sleep.
